Creativity Collective’s First Meetings!

Thank you to everyone who helped make our first couple of meetings a success! So many people had great ideas (which we diligently noted) about where to take this group…our future could not be more promising thanks to all of you! Here are some photos from the second info sesh that went down this past Thursday, Feb 9th against the beautiful backdrop of the International Lounge in Willard Straight Hall. Everyone is making these cute little heart boxes out of old cardboard boxes to fill with candy for Valentine’s Day. Check out some of the results!

Vintage Suitcase Charging Station

Design Sponge shares an idea from SugarSCOUT to turn an old vintage suitcase into a unique and discreet charging station for your electronics! It would be perfect to hide modern devices in a room focused on vintage charm.

“Quilts” from Old Street Signs

To cover up unsightly air handling units near City Hall in Memphis, artist Greeley Myatt used decommissioned street signs to create an intricate patchwork wall.

Using about 700 speed-limit, caution, and stop signs (and even a few Memphis City Beautiful signs), Myatt designed traditional quilt patterns in 4-by-12 foot panels. The panels, visible from Front Street and Adams Avenue, hide a chain-link fence and City Hall’s heating and cooling system.

Oversized Crepe Paper Rose

I’ll admit it, I’m a sucker for things that are bigger or smaller than their expected sizes. Tiny mug? Sure. Giant pen? I’m all about it. That’s why I was struck by this lovely oversized crepe paper flower. It looks easy enough to make, and Green Wedding Shoes has provided a wonderfully detailed tutorial.

Birds on a Wire Framed Art

Similar to the posters we created for Creativity Collective, Sweet Verbena reuses  dictionary pages to create visually appealing framed artwork. Follow the link for a detailed tutorial on how you can recreate this concept. She totally put a bird on it.

Bell Peppers for Veggie Dip

I just really like this idea of using bell peppers as an all natural, edible holder for dipping sauce on a veggie platter. Not only is it aesthetically pleasing, but it leaves you with no waste!

Teddy Bear Basket

I’m not sure if this teddy bear basket is cute or sadistic, but it involves mutilating a helpless teddy bear. Even so, I kinda like it.

Spoon Flower Pendant

I’m not sure how easy it would be to have these turn out as good as the picture, but I really love the idea. Another project with disposable spoons, these flower pendants are a great idea. The site is written in Chinese but there isn’t much commentary on the project anyway.

Silverware Wall Art

Here is a perfect DIY piece of artwork for the kitchen. All you do is take old silverware and paint it, and then arrange it in the frame like so. There are different feels you could go with from elegant to funky. Continue reading

Glass Jar Candy Pedestals

These little glass jar candy pedestals are so festive and fun! They suggest using old pickle jars, but you may want to downplay that fun fact to your guests. Still, it’s a great way to reuse an old glass jar from anything, and it is quite decorative.
